I'm sure most of you are familiar with the myth of Pandora.
For those of you who aren't, in Greek mythology a girl named Pandora was given several gifts, one of these, given by a jealous god, was a box which she was told she must NEVER open. For a long time, she was able to restrain herself, until one day, her curiosity finally got the better of her and she opened the box...
Inside were all the evils and illnesses and bad things of the world. As soon as she opened the lid, they all rushed out and escaped into the world to torment and plague it. Pandora slammed the box shut, managing to capture the last thing within it.
A tiny voice cried out to her from inside the box..."Please let me go, I am the only thing that can keep the evil things from destroying humanity!"
Pandora was eventually convinced to open the box once more, and out flew the tiniest glimmer of a thing...It was Hope, and it has helped us to cope with evil times ever since.

As a sidenote, the Chinese curse I refer to goes "May you live in interesting times" in other words, war. This comes from the philosophy that as boring as peace and safety are, they are much more preferable to the sort of excitement violence brings, so often ending in death.

As you read, pay attention to which words have been capitalized...they are (some of) the evils which Pandora released...
